Every year, around 5000+ aspirants try to crack NEED in GDPD and PGDPD Design Aptitude Test (PGDPD or GDPD) conducted at 12 centres: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chennai, Delhi, Noida, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and Nagpur. GDPD: Selection for UG courses is in two phases: 1) Written Examination to test the candidates’ observation skills, sketching skills, clarity of ideas/concepts and their futuristic thinking; 2) Studio Test only top 300 candidates from written test are called for the second phase to test their creativity, presence of mind, soft skills, etc. Out of the final 300 only 100 students become eligible for admission. First year is common for all 100 UG students at the end of which NID prepares a fresh list and allocates the students under respective 8 courses. PGDPD: Selection for PG courses is also in two phases: 1) Written Examination and 2) Group Discussion and Personal Interview only top 735 candidates from written test are shortlisted and out of that only 245 students become eligible for admission in 17 different domains. For those failing to get through NEED, doors are not closed as many design schools accept NEED scores, for example IILM School of Design, Wigan and Leigh College, Pearl Academy of Fashion, DJ Academy of Design, etc.

The competition is very intense for admission to this prestigious institute. Only well-prepared students manage to gain admission.
